Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film we've been eagerly awaiting since its announcement. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. In a festive surprise, a preview has now been released, even if it's compromised by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining why Nolan initially kept the preview exclusive to cinemas. The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble The debut footage reveals Matt Damon portraying the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway depicting the loyal wife. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, to which he respond by asking what happens if he cannot. Furthermore, the preview provides a brief, shadowy glimpse at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey. Based upon a cornerstone in classic storytelling, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest undertaken by the famed ruler. After his triumph in the Trojan War, as told within the companion epic, the king faces a long and perilous return to his homeland. Mythical Encounters with an All-Star Cast On his travels, the hero encounters numerous obstacles and mythical beings. This roster features the witch-goddess Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to reunite with Penelope and Telemachus on his home island. The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio are Charlize Theron portraying the shrewd goddess, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal. A Tale of Many Adaptations The classic poem has inspired many reinterpretations over the years. These range from modern retellings to a 1999 ballet. There has even been adapted into a musical titled Epic: The Musical, presented as a nine-album collection. The official trailer has been highly anticipated since the film's announcement and a short teaser clip which was initially shown only on the big screen. The Odyssey will debut in IMAX theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
