Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
