Preamble

Forest vs Malmö and historical connections. The both teams have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's last European campaign in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the continental championship decades past that links these clubs, with the groundbreaking transfer the English forward scoring the winner of a rather dull championship game to clinch eternal glory for the the English club.

"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, modestly dressed amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the mafficking," noted the journalist. This represented an outstanding achievement that it is hard to see being repeated – from the lower league to European stage in three seasons."

It's also interesting to consider Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Nordic team to make the championship match under English manager Bob Houghton.

This match is a very different to that summit, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in that era. Forest are riding high after defeating Liverpool convincingly at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since early November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The smart money is on the home team tonight.

Plenty of other action on offer in this clockwatch. The Scottish side have already been beaten by a European rival this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the half-way stage of the initial phase with no points whatsoever. They urgently require a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a comeback for a playoff spot.

Updates will continue with all the evening matches and provide the most recent results from the earlier matches, including Villa vs Young Boys and the Dutch-Scottish clash.
